OVFM CLUB MEETING TUESDAY OCTOBER 5th 2021

It’s time to face the music and Gdansk as OVFM returns to Zoom for our next club meeting, and yes, there was a festive clue there as to what you can expect to see.

Inspired by guest speaker Michael Gough, the Legion of Doom decided to dig out two films based on the aforementioned Polish city to share with us. Both films were made by Reg and Annabelle Lancaster albeit individually, so it will be interesting to see if there is a difference in approach or perspective between the two films.

For the other part of the evening, a little cooperation from other club members is required here. The idea is that members will be given five minutes to tell a story of something that happened in their lives which could be turned into a film project. Considering most of you were around when life was still black and white, there should be no shortage of impressive yarns from yesteryear to regale us with and turn into your next cinematic effort.

That is all to come this Tuesday. As ever, club secretary Barbara J. Darby will send out the Zoom log in details by email 24 hours prior to the meeting.

See you then!

OVFM CLUB MEETING TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 21st 2021

The next time OVFM gets to together we shall be handing over the floor to a guest speaker, who some of you might already know.

Michael Gough FACI (M) is NOT the celebrated British actor with over 150 film and Tv credits to his name, including Doctor Who, The Avengers, countless Hammer horror films, and Alfred Pennyworth in the 1980s-1990s Batman film series. It would be a miracle if he was since the actor died in 2011!

This Michael Gough is a prolific filmmaker, public speaker, member of the IAC Council, and fellow Premiere Pro user. He will be  delivering a presentation entitled The Way I Tell ’em for OVFM this coming Tuesday, September 21st exclusively on Zoom. Michael will (presumably) be showing some of his films and regaling us with stories about their making or the history behind them, as well as detailing how having the same name as famous actor has been a life long bane of his existence. But mostly, it will be about his films.

Our club secretary Barbara J. Darby will send out the link details for the meeting to club members 24 hours prior to the event.

Look out for those emails next week and we hope you will join Michael and everyone else this coming Tuesday for an entertaining evening from the comfort of your own homes!

OVFM CLUB MEETING TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 7th 2021

It’s been a while but OVFM are taking the first steps in resuming the club meeting schedule in person in the Barnyard Rooms at St Augustine’s church in Petts Wood!

After a year of holding meetings – including the 2020 Oscars – via Zoom we are cautiously inviting club members to come face to face with each other as we used to do in the old days of early 2020 BC (Before COVID). As much as we’d like to see a healthy turn out for this first return to normal meeting we do understand that some of you may not be able to attend in person due to elf-isolating or don’t quite feel ready to leave your bubbles just yet.

Hopefully you have all read the health and safety protocols that were emailed to you a few weeks back and have accepted them in lieu of returning the club room. Feel free to wear a mask if you so desire, just remember to speak up for us hard of hearing folk!

Regarding the programme for the evening, this is a bit trickier.  Unfortunately, most of the committee have either swanned off on holiday or are staying at home, leaving our chair Jane Oliver to run everything herself. – and that includes things like the projector and laptop, which she is a bit nervous about. In the vent it does al work, we’ll either take a trawl through the archives or – if the arrives in time – have a look at the programme from the recent TRIANGLE COMPETITION which OVFM WON!

If not, I suppose we can discuss the weather or something.

We hope to see you then.

Triangle Competition 2021 – The Results

On 2nd Sept 2021, Spring Park hosted the annual Triangle Competition (after a break in 2020) with OVFM, Shooter’s Hill, and Epsom submitting their programmes for entry and judgement by Spring Park.

There were 21 attendees in all, mostly home base members with 3 members each representing  their competing clubs which is better than nothing in this current climate. Shooters Hill did a good job bearing in mind their dwindling numbers during recent years which meant they had few films they could pick from the relevant period.  Sadly Shooters Hill have closed, albeit they have been invited to join OVFM should they choose.

Epsom put on rather a strange mix, some of which made little sense to me and lacked the spark of the other two clubs.

Run by Graham Evans chairman, the three Spring Park judges unanimously, and without reference to one another, chose OVFM’s presentation as the winner.  They concluded that every film OVFM had shown was made to a very high standard in their own right.  They were impressed!

Congratulations to all who had a film included in the OVFM programme to help steal back our silverware after 9 years!

According to the trophy, now safely in the hands of the chairman, Orpington has won 16 times.  It appears that the Triangle Competition started in 1975.  (46 years)

OVFM – Public Zoom Showcase – October 15th

Since the Pandemic, many people have learned new skills or taken up new hobbies, whilst the rise of communicating via video devices and platforms such as Zoom and Skype replacing meeting in person. This has also meant people are using their phone cameras on a more regular basis to share their lives with others, but like anything, there is always more you can do with this

The probability is you may have a lot of footage sitting in your cameras or devices that could be turned into something special that you could revisit in the future and keep those memories alive  for you and your kin. You could even make a narrative tale out of these clips, to make it more entertaining, whether you plan to share them with friends and family, or to reach out further via social media. The possibilities are endless and OVFM are happy to show you how to achieve this.

With that in mind, OVFM is inviting you to a Zoom meeting to try to encourage anyone with an interest in film making to join our club. It doesn’t matter whether you use a specialist camcorder, an SLR camera, or a smartphone, we hope to demonstrate how joining OVFM will help you make better films.  We would also welcome anyone interested in acting and looking to gain experience  in this area, or if you have an idea for a film that we could make with you.

Taking place on Friday October 15th, at 20:00pm (please ensure to log in by 19:45pm) the session will last approximately 45-60 minutes, depending on how many questions there are.

WHAT WE WILL COVER

Introduction – We’ll tell you a bit about OVFM, show you short clips to illustrate the types of film we make and hear from members on what they get from being part of the club.

Film Making Evenings – A look at the activities and filming process at one of our film making evenings where everyone gets a chance to be involved.

Collaboration – Team work is an integral part of OVFM, so nobody has to carry the burden of filmmaking alone, and by working together we improve our skills, as we will discuss here.

Tutorials – Filmmakers are always learning as software, equipment, and techniques change, hence occasional training evenings are required, which will shall demonstrate here.

Archive – Take a stroll through our digital archive of over 800 films by members along with extracts from some of our older films.

OVFM Competitions – Club competitions are a way to measure our growth and creativity as a filmmaker as well as keep us busy  throughout the year, culminating in our annual Oscars Evening, of which we’ll have an exclusive look..

Q&A – Still want to learn more? Our club members will be happy to answer questions you have about any aspect of amateur film making.

If you are interested in attending this session, please register your interest by sending an email headed OVFM PUBLIC ZOOM to info@ovfm.org.uk and we will send you the details for the meeting closer to the date. Do feel free to spread the word among any friends or family you think may also be interested and we will be happy to invite them too.

In the meantime, feel free to browse some the films from our extensive archives, including:

TOP TEN COMPETITION 2021

Just when you thought it was safe it’s back!!! The COVID pandemic might have brought the physical meetings and activities within OVFM to a halt but technology has afforded us the ability to circumvent this as those of you who have participated in the Zoom club meetings will know.

Having successfully held the delayed 2020 OSCARS via this method, we will press on in the same vein with one of our longest running and prominent annual competitions the Top Ten!

Split into just two rounds this year, the running of this event is now in the hands of our new Competitions Officer David Roman-Halliday. Because we are looking to resume club meetings at the Barnard Rooms, we are aware that not everyone will be able to attend just yet so not only do we hope to run the session via Zoom so those people can join in, but we shall also be making the films available online via the club’s Vimeo channel in a bespoke Showcase and shared via email 24 hours after the meetings take place.

Those members who aren’t able to attend in person will have SEVEN DAYS to watch and vote on the films and submit their forms via email. The films will then be taken down if any alterations need to be made should they proceed to the final in January 2022.

Because of this, there is naturally a change to how you should submit your films. Due to the time and logistics of uploading the films, we ask that you submit your film to David Laker or David R-H TWO WEEKS before the round is due to take place, with one week before being the latest they will be accepted. You can do this via FILEZILLA or by using the FREE online service WeTransfer which is very easy to use and can send files up to 2Gb in size. We ask your films be in MP4 format (do please consult THIS ARTICLE on bitrates if your file is too large) and in the highest resolution possible (720p, 1080p, or 2160p) for best picture quality.

You should by now have an email from David R-H informing you which round you have been randomly drawn to participate in.  If you need to change your round please contact David R-H to make this arrangement.

Here is the list of club members and the rounds they are requested to submit their films:

Obviously, we appreciate that not everybody has been able to get out and about with their cameras but being in Lockdown has been a chance for many of you to try something new that is worth sharing, or maybe you took this chance to refine your filming or editing skills whilst indoors. Surviving Lockdown itself is a topic that easy to document, either creatively or factually – in fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if this was a dominant theme for the films entered this year.

We do hope that there will be enough responses to make this year’s competition worthwhile and we look forward to seeing what you have been up to over the past 18 months.

Thanks for reading and good luck to all who enter a film.

OVFM and the 2020 Euro Finals!

England in Euro 2020 Final

Every year Orpington Video & Film Makers produces an annual newsreel of events in and around Orpington.  For 2021 we will want to feature Sunday’s Euros Cup Final and need your help to provide footage that we can include.

We would welcome any material, especially film, you can provide from your camera or phone such as England flags on buildings, houses or cars; people wearing England shirts, hats etc; displays in shop windows; any local events that are organised.  In particular; when the match is played on Sunday we’d like any footage of reactions of people watching and, hopefully, celebrating. When filming or photographing, please hold your phone horizontally to provide a landscape picture if possible and ensure the images are of the highest pixel resolution

If you can supply anything, please let us know at info@ovfm.org.uk  and we’ll advise you how to send it to us.

Thanks in advance!

The 2020 OSCARS (Finally!) – The Results!

THE RESULTS

The 2020 OVFM Oscars finally took place earlier tonight (February 23rd), a year later and under very different circumstances due to the ongoing Lockdown! Organised by David Laker and John Epton and hosted by Ian Menage, the event was held online via Zoom, as indeed most gathering are these days (at least by sensible people).

Because of this we were able to invite many people who normally would be unable to join us at our usual meeting venue, including our country members, people from other film clubs and even a few interested guests discovering us for the first time!

Another first sees the addition of to new trophies – the Rising Star award is for first time entrants into our competitions, and Most Creative, to honour those who let their imaginations run wild, whilst the old Raasay Trophy for films of no specific category has been retired and replaced by a new own, rechristened the Free Spirit Trophy.

We are indebted to Judges Roy Powell, Alan Cross, Howard Johnson and David Allen from South Downs Film Makers for taking the time to watch and rate our films for us, and to Roy and Alan for joining us for this event.

So without further ado, here is the list of winners as voted for by OVFM members and judged by South Downs.

In Memoriam – Peggy Parmenter

Sadly, Peggy Parmenter passed away on 11th February 2021.  Peggy had slowed down a lot over recent years, not surprising when you consider her age.  During the last year or so she had increasing health problems that left her pretty much immobile.  Her husband Ron, whom she dearly loved, cared for at home but as her health deteriorated, she had more hospital visits than she would have cared for.  Just a few days before she passed away she was once more hospitalised, where she later died.  Peggy and Ron had been married for over 63 years and he will miss her terribly. Our thoughts go out to him and the family at this sad time.

Peggy was one of those ‘get up and go’ girls.  She had no time to sit around and had to be on the go, constantly doing something.  She would insist that she could manage, even when things were becoming impossible for her to continue with.  She was ‘in charge’.  In charge of serving others, a wonderful gift to have; whether teas or coffees, savouries, cakes or puddings whenever there was a social event or a day of filming she would organise the food, delighting others with her homemade fare.

For shows, where OVFM catered for visitors, she went the extra mile to make special treats, filling her freezer up to the gunnels.  One such occasion that she catered for was the North v South competition that OVFM used to host. She would have likeminded volunteers lined up to help out both with the home made cooking and the service on the day.

Peggy enjoyed talking to people, socialising and having fun and you’d know that she was about, due to her distinctive voice and little chuckle.  She possessed a natural talent for acting.  She learned her lines so that her words would flow naturally and seamlessly as though in conversation, entering fully into the spirit of the character she was playing………  And if there was a reason to ‘dress up’ Peggy would oblige.

OVFM were very fortunate to have such a versatile member amongst their ranks.  It is good that we are left with so many good memories of Peggy as we see her starring in many of the older films within our archives.

Peggy, we will miss you, may you rest in peace.

In Memoriam – Reg Lancaster

It was with great sadness that we learned that Reg Lancaster had slipped away peacefully at home on 13th December 2020, with his wife Annabelle and their son Ray at his side.

Reg had spent 44 years as a Fleet Street photographer/photo journalist for the Daily Express that had taken him travelling the globe.  He covered anything and everything; sports events, film sets, celebrities and the news.  He got a thrill from being ‘in the thick of it’ whether snapping a photo of Martin Luther King in London; Mick and Bianca Jagger in Saint-Tropez; racing driver John Surtees at Monza; the riots in Paris as tension built between students and riot police escalating in an exchange missiles or a Soviet tank being wrecked by a group of Czech youths in Prague.

He understood framing, angles, lighting and how to capture that special moment when there was only one chance to get the right shot. No wonder he became such a talented film maker, winning award after award, locally, nationally and internationally.  His talents didn’t stop at film making; he was equally talented as a writer and presenter and an evening in the company of Reg was always worthwhile.

OVFM was privileged to have Reg.  He was one of our longest serving members and spent 40 years on the Committee, 18 of these as Chairman!  That’s commitment.

Looking at the names engraved on the various cups, Reg’s name crops us year after year.  This must have left some members wondering whether they could ever reach his standards and nick some silverware from under his nose, or whether they could bribe him with a ticket to watch his beloved Manchester United football team.

He was a good, fair and honest judge, helping to judge numerous competitions.  He was generous in his willingness to help others as they progressed as filmmakers, giving constructive feedback and providing practical guidance on how to improve.

One OVFM member told me that Reg was the best director they had ever worked under.  He wasn’t satisfied until he had got the right shot.  Some folk didn’t much like having to do ‘take after take’, but others were pleased that he took time to ensure the ‘film was in the can’ as it increased their capabilities and skills as actors; camera operators; lighting operators, sound engineers or in any other capacity.

And then there were all those wonderful journalistic style articles that he wrote in various magazines, some with his touch of humour coming through.

It wasn’t just OVFM that were blessed.  He spent time as the president of the IAC, was heavily involved in UNICA, BIAFF, and festivals worldwide.  His love of travelling never seemed to leave him and many of his wonderfully documented films gave us wonderful glimpses into Countries that we wouldn’t get to visit.

Reg has left us with a wealth of films made over the years, many made with his wife Annabelle, which we will treasure.

We offer our sincere condolences to Annabelle and Ray.  You are in our thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.

Jane Oliver, OVFM Chairman
