NEXT OVFM CLUB MEETING – Tuesday March 5th

WHY AM I HERE?

Admittedly it wasn’t that long ago when we first announced this Film To A Theme topic but we hope that some of you were inspired  by the nebulous possibilities the title of “Why Am I Here?” conjures up and have been hard at work putting those ideas onto film.

Remember, this is not a competition evening so these films won’t be judged but if you want feedback or constructive criticism, we will happily oblige, time permitting of course.

As usual we ask a little cooperation from everyone bringing a film to the meeting to PLEASE REPLY TO THIS POST in the comments/reply section below, letting us know the film’s run time, media format (DVD, Blu-ray, USB/Memory stick), file format if using the latter (MP4, MKV, AVI, etc.) and picture ratio (4:3 or 16:9). This is a great help for us when planning the evening out and helping things run smoothly so if you could do us this courtesy it would be greatly appreciated.

Just a heads up to warn you not to get too comfortable as we will be announcing our next Film To A Theme project very shortly with the screening date set for April!

Thanks for reading and we look forward to seeing your latest gems on Tuesday!

FILM TO A THEME – NOTICE

WHY AM I HERE?

A question we have no doubt asked ourselves on numerous occasions, be it at school, work, a concert, a seminar, hospital appointment, or maybe even standing at the altar before a crowded congregation with the vicar an your future spouse waiting for an answer to a very important question!

Perhaps there is a philosophical side to this question pertaining to life and the universe to be explored? What if someone has been abducted and wakes up in a strange location? Or you simply want to extol the virtues of being a member of OVFM, this latest Film to A Theme project gives you the chance to capture your thoughts and ideas on film (well memory cards – or mini DV tape for those of you still stuck in the early 2000’s) and share them with the rest of us.

The deadline and screening date is the club meeting on Tuesday March 5th so get your thinking caps on and let your creative juices flow!

HOLIDAY FILMS

Time sure flies, doesn’t it? It was only two months ago we first announced this Film To A Theme topic and here we are already for the screening evening. It’s not the easiest subject to come up with something but this is OVFM and we usually find a way to make these projects work.

As well as getting to share you hard work and creativity with the rest of the club in response to this project, this is a double header meeting if you will, as we also invite members to submit their holiday films for screening as per the annual start of the year tradition. We also ask that these films are no longer than 5 minutes in length which should be ample to show off how good a time you had and to remind us of what sunshine looks like during this cold winter months!

Thanks for heading and we look forward to seeing your latest gems on Tuesday!

IF ONLY I COULD REMEMBER

Alright folks it’s time to set another Film To A Theme project challenge for you.

As we get older our memories begin to play tricks with us from forgetting birthdays to forgetting why entered a room. We also forget things we said or have written in the past. As we get older our memories begin to play tricks with us….wait, didn’t I write that already?

See, it’s easy to forget things and there is plenty of comic capital to mined from this but it is not always a pleasant experience either. Forgetting to pick up a birthday cake could ruin someone’s special day, or remembering to collect someone from a train station or from a night out could have saved their life.

Maybe you have a moment in your life that is precious but has become so faded in your mind that you wish you could relive it one more time and get that memory back. or is there a song of film or TV show or actor/actress you are having trouble remembering the name of and need some help?

These are just some suggestions of what you could do but the important thing is you get your thinking caps on, your cameras out and make a film on this topic.

Now, here is the important bit you NEED to remember – the date of the screening for your films is FEBRUARY 5th 2019

Happy filming and we look forward to seeing your efforts in two months time!

OVFM CLUB MEETING TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 18TH

DIAMOND

It’s been a few months since first announced this Film To A Theme topic giving you all plenty of time to get your thinking caps and produce something to fit the theme of “Diamond”, partially created to tie in with the club’s 60th anniversary, but not limited to this as a subject for your films.

This week’s meeting is when you finally get to share you hard work and creativity with the rest of the club.

Thanks for heading and we look forward to seeing your latest gems on Tuesday!

FILM TO A THEME – NOTICE

DIAMOND

As you know, 2018 marks OVFM’s 60th anniversary which in the elements celebration list is marked by a diamond. naturally, this lends itself to a subject for a theme which is exactly what this latest project is about.

In keeping with the tradition of choosing themes with a nebulous scope, diamond is no different. It could taken literally and you could make a feature about the precious (and expensive) gemstone, either an artistic piece using its capacity for reflecting light, or maybe a drama about diamond smuggling.

Another literal interpretation as it pertains to the club is a 60th anniversary tribute to OVFM, from your own perspective or gathering interviews with others, or maybe even a celebration at all the things we do and achieve as a club.

But it is the thinking outside of the box that makes for the best films and diamond has a number of other meanings or applications – like a “diamond geezer”, or the diamond suit in a pack of playing cards, or a diamond in the rough. Perhaps you are a fan of Neil Diamond, or TV presenter Anne Diamond or wrestler Diamond Dallas Page. What about the 1950’s singing group The Diamonds (Little Darlin’, The Stroll)? Didn’t Shirley Bassey sing “Diamonds Are Forever“? Any baseball fans here? The playing field is called a diamond – there’s another idea.

No doubt you can think of your own ideas to dazzle us with, so get your thinking caps on and your cameras out because the deadline for this project, is the club meeting on TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 18th!

Thanks for reading and good luck and we look forward to seeing your films in two months time!

OVFM CLUB MEETING TUESDAY MAY 29TH 2018

This week’s meeting sees the screening of the results of your hard work in making a film set to music or a poem, as first announced HERE.

Not to be confused with the Vic Treen Trophy, we’ve loosened the rules a little for this project and opened the scope of inspiration to include poems too, either self-written or extant published classics.

Unlike the Vic Treen Trophy your films are not being judged but if you want feedback then do ask for it and I am sure your fellow club members will be happy to oblige.

We look forward to seeing these visual interpretations on Tuesday night!

FILM TO A THEME – NOTICE

FILMS SET TO MUSIC OR POETRY

It was decided by the Committee that the old “project” name be dropped and instead an new initiative take its place, hence the new title “Films’ To A Theme”. The concept is still the same, to encourage club members to make more films and challenge their creativity through  a number of regular tasks set to a fertile topic or theme.

To kick things off for this new beginning is a slight riff on an old favourite – films set to music or poetry. Unlike the Vic Treen Trophy competition held at the end of the year, the rules on this occasion are not as strict insofar as fulfilling the remit. Whilst obviously the film needs to have some sort of narrative, keeping strictly to the beat of the music isn’t a necessary requirement so you can have bit of fun with your images. And you don’t have to stick to music either – everyday sounds like bird song or traffic, construction noises or people talking and animal sounds could make up your soundtrack, the floor is yours.

Conversely, if you wish to make a literal interpretation of a popular song or create a visual narrative then that is acceptable too, which naturally applies to poems as well – in fact this would likely be a better fit. Or you could combine the too and have some gentle music to accompany your poem. The poetry can be something of your own creation or a published work, same for the music, but please take note that it is the responsibility of the individual to ensure they have the correct copyright clearances when using extant published materials.

Hopefully this will prove a challenging yet fruitful exercise for you to get your teeth into and get those creative juices flowing but here’s bad news – the date for the screening of these films is the club meeting to be held on TUESDAY MAY 29th 2018, giving you roughly four weeks to put something together.

Thanks for reading and we look forward to seeing your films on May 29th!

OVFM CLUB MEETING – TUESDAY February 6th

ADS & TRAILERS

This week’s meeting gives club members the opportunity to share with us the results of their hard work in creating adverts and/or trailers for any upcoming films they may have, as per the remit outlined in this post last month.

Given the sheer scope of options available for the ads category, be it spoof, straight or for a product your own creation, we hope that your imaginations went into overdrive and look forward to seeing a varied evening of commercials we won’t want to fast forward through!

As usual we ask a little cooperation from everyone bringing a film to meeting to PLEASE REPLY TO THIS POST in the comments/reply section below, letting us know the film’s run time, media format (DVD, Blu-ray, USB/Memory stick), file format if using the latter (MP4, MKV, AVI, etc.) and picture ratio (4:3 or 16:9). This is a great help for us when planning the evening out and helping things run smoothly so if you could do us this courtesy it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for reading and be sure to join us for what might be the only time in which making the tea comes AFTER the ads!

New OVFM Project – Trailers/Adverts

Trailers/Adverts

The first project for 2018 looks to be one of the more challenging we’ve ever set but also could prove to be one of the more rewarding as the creativity we know that is within our club members will be put to the test and on display in all its glory in producing some remarkable results under this particular double remit.

To elaborate on what is expected of you from each theme, Adverts is almost self-explanatory in that we are asking you to create your own advert/commercial! It can be for anything you like – a book, car, breakfast cereal, holiday location, music release or something you have invented yourself – there are no limits as long as they follow the basic rules of a TV advert: i.e keep them short (say 30-40 seconds), make them informative, creative and can be either serious and arty or silly and fun, especially if you are doing a spoof ad.

Trailers are naturally to promote a film, so if you have a film in the works or already completed and want to tease us about then this is the perfect opportunity to do just that. Or, if you have an idea for a film that you are unsure if it has any potential, then why not make a brief teaser trailer and let us offer our feedback to see where you can take this idea. Again, they don’t have to be that long – a minute at the most depending on how long your film is and how much you are prepared to give away.

By way of an example (and if you’ve forgive the indulgence) here is the teaser I did for MEET DEXTER:

Now for the important bit – the deadline for your entries which can either one or both subjects, is the club meeting on FEBRUARY 6th, giving you just over a month to put something together.

Good luck and have fun!
