OVFM CLUB MEETING TUESDAY MAY 29TH 2018

This week’s meeting sees the screening of the results of your hard work in making a film set to music or a poem, as first announced HERE.

Not to be confused with the Vic Treen Trophy, we’ve loosened the rules a little for this project and opened the scope of inspiration to include poems too, either self-written or extant published classics.

Unlike the Vic Treen Trophy your films are not being judged but if you want feedback then do ask for it and I am sure your fellow club members will be happy to oblige.

As usual we ask a little cooperation from everyone bringing a film to the meeting to PLEASE REPLY TO THIS POST in the comments/reply section below, letting us know the film’s run time, media format (DVD, Blu-ray, USB/Memory stick), file format if using the latter (MP4, MKV, AVI, etc.) and picture ratio (4:3 or 16:9). This is a great help for us when planning the evening out and helping things run smoothly so if you could do us this courtesy it would be greatly appreciated.

We look forward to seeing these visual interpretations on Tuesday night!

  1. What looked to be like an evening of only four or five films turned out to be more like a dozen. Some to music, some to a poem and some with both music and poetry, all interesting well made films. I don’t recall having seen any of them before, so am encouraged to see new films flooding in. Well done to everyone who contributed.

It was fascinating to see a film from one of our newcomers; Maria. So different from anything I had seen before…… a comedy, something we don’t see many of at OVFM and so well put together. I’m sure we will be seeing a lot more of her work. We were treated to a little cracker from Ian, another unusual film, starring our very own ‘Freddy’.

Now we know we have a competition on as tonight we saw many entries that would be eligible for the Vic Treen trophy. Bring it on.

  2. Twas an interesting night indeed. Only four people declared films on this site (boo!) but we ended up with 13 being screened last night.

First up and setting the bar at a stratospheric level for everyone else to follow ( 😛 ) was my rush-job entry “Sparks Will Fly” (did anyone get the title?), my second film to feature pugs Penny and Millie set to some classic 70’s glam rock. A returning Bob Wyeth submitted two films – “Journey’s End” was about trains whilst “Gardens” featured lots of flowers to the strains of Strauss (the other one).

Also providing two films was Barbara Darby – with her personal tribute to her late husband in “Gordon’s Memories” and a short children’s poem “Wittering Worm” – and the Boss Lady herself Jane Oliver, sneakily using the same music to two different films “Freedoms ’18” and “Best Seasons”.

Not to be outdone, Jim Morten-Robertson brought three films with him – “Mad Dogs”, set to “Mad Dogs & Englishmen” by Noel Coward, “Stately Homes” set to “Red House” by Jimi Hendrix (although I might be wrong on that one), and a cheeky poem “Tired As A Newt”, in which Jim pays tribute to TV comedy character Rab C. Nesbitt.

Ian Menage presented a poem film entitled “…104!” which not only starred our eximious club secretary Freddy Beard but was also dedicated to her as well! And in the spirit of doing something different John Bunce provided his own guitar soundtrack to his film “String Poetry”.

The biggest surprise of the evening was the first submission from our newest club member Maria Alexander that really was different from what we are used to seeing. “Zombie Cafe” was a comedy about zombies around Bromley. What, you didn’t know there were zombies in Bromley? Perhaps you need to get up earlier in the day to see them as this film attests… 😮

As Jane suggested above, the films shown on this evening are a positive sign that we could have a very productive and exciting year when it comes to our club competitions! 🙂
