OVFM Coaching Evenings 2014

ovfm coaching

It’s Spring 2014 and once again it is time for us to restore the faith in our less confident filmmakers with the annual coaching evening sessions.

As ever Ian “Hole In One” Menage has been hard at work constructing another programme for all of us to benefit from with helpful advice and masterclasses from the more experienced and knowledge club members to aid those of us still in the starting blocks with improving our filmmaking skills.

There is one notable change to the programme this year – we will NOT being making a film as part of these sessions. This was part of the programme in the past but it was felt that we were rushing some of the more practical and theoretical aspects of these tutorials in the hurry to put them into practice. Therefore this  year, while there will be some practical endeavours, the idea is that we have time to refine and apply what we have learned in our time with the end results hopefully being demonstrated in our films entered for the Top 10 or project evenings.

This is the current list of dates and proposed by Ian along with the subject and theme for each evening (subject to change):

Mar 25: Lighting with Simon Earwicker / Scriptwriting with Celtx pt 2 with Lee Relph

Apr 8: Music in film: Best choices of music for your film / Music software and royalty free music with Mike Shaw

Apr 22: Editing Different editing suites demonstrations (in small groups) with John Epton, David Laker and Andy Watson

May 6:  Outside filming practice Pt 1 – practical filming experience at a nearby external location

May 20: Outside filming practice Pt 2 – As above

We do hope you will all take the opportunity to attend these sessions and improve both your knowledge and understanding of filmmaking and equipment, as previous years have proven to be invaluable to those who have attended. Good or bad we’ve all learned something!

Any further questions should be directed to Ian Menage at ian.menage@gmail.com or please check back at this page for any updates.

Thanks for reading and hope to see you there!

2014 OVFM Oscars – The Results

THE RESULTS

Hello and welcome to the annual OVFM Oscars Results report.

The 2014 OVFM Oscars took place in front of a bored audience at the Barnard Room, St Augustine’s Church on a somewhat chilly night but that didn’t stop them dressing up in their best glad rags for the events. Actually it did stop a few of them – names have been noted and the lads will be round later to “have a word”….

No wonder fashion designers do drugs...
No wonder fashion designers do drugs…

We were fortunate enough to be joined by two of the judges from Haywards Heath Movie Makers Ron Prosser and David Fenn while third judge Rod Willerton clearly had something better to do. Hope those toenails are now nice and neat Rod! Ron and David seemed to enjoy themselves – assuming banging your head against the wall screaming “get me out of here” is a Haywards Heath way of expressing pleasure that is!

As is the case in many awards ceremony one film or filmmaker will often dominate the voting usually leading to commensurate rewards. This year it was our chairman Simon “Snapper” Earwicker who was the big winner, taking home almost every award except for Best Hair, Best Costume, Best Use Of A Pineapple and Best Film Not In The Martian Language.

OVFM Club Meeting Tuesday March 4th 2014 – OVFM OSCARS!!

ovfmoscars14

“They say the neon lights are bright on Broadway”

Well they have nothing compared to the luminescence of the OVFM Oscars, especially those Yanks who are trying to steal our thunder by hosting their thrupenny bit knockoff version two days before ours!

The biggest event in the OVFM calendar arrives on March 4th where the hard work and creativity of OVFM club members are rewarded with fetching little trinkets that have had a load of names and dates scratched into them. With bated breath (or fresh breath if you use mouth wash) many of use are on tenterhooks wondering if our names will be added to those which have already caused a huge devaluation to the resell worth of said trophies!

As ever we have many awards being contested including:

Ian Dunbar Cup

Orpington Trophy

Jubilee Shield

Vincent Pons Trophy

Mike Turner Plate

Kath Jones Cup

Peggy Parmenter Knife & Fork

We’ll also find out who has come second to Barbara “Cakes” Darby in the 2013 Top Ten competition.

This year we are thankful to Rod Willerton, Ron Prosser and David Fenn of Haywards Heath Movie Makers for kindly judging the films on our behalf and we believe Messers Prosser and Fenn might be joining on the night, so we can thank them personally (or beat them up if we don’t anything).

And of course it wouldn’t be an award ceremony without the display of high fashion and glamour so members are encouraged to expel the mothballs from their Sunday finest and dress up for the occasion, or if you are so inclined you can indulge in a bit of fancy dress. Last year long time member John Alford came dressed as an empty chair but was devastated when no-one noticed. The moral of this tale? Choose your costume wisely!

Last year’s big winner was Colin “Colin” Jones who took home seven awards although he only actually won five, followed by Mrs. “Cakes” Darby who won three. Who will be the triumphant winner(s) this year?

The only way to find out is to join us this Tuesday March 4th at the Barnard Room, St Augustine’s Church for the 2014 OVFM Oscars!!

Hope to see you all then!

New OVFM Project – Green

ovfm_proj

GREEN!

Hello again and here we are with another exciting club project for you to participate in.

The subject this time is “Green”.  Now what does that mean you ask? Well, it could mean a number of things: something incorporating the colour perhaps; a tribute to your favourite fruit or vegetable; a tour around your garden; a golfing green; maybe something to do with the environment; a film about author Graham Greene, guitar legend Peter Green or TV impresario Hughie Green; perhaps you have done something using a green screen; you might even have a cold and have coughed up something green; aliens are supposed to be green aren’t they? – whatever it is we ask you to get out your cameras, get filming and show it to the club!

The deadline (i.e: the night we’ll be showing the films) is TUESDAY APRIL 29TH so don’t say we don’t give you enough advanced warning on these projects!

Thanks for reading and we look forward to seeing the fruits of your labours on the 29th of April!

50/50 Evening with Spring Park

50_50

with Spring Park

Sharing can be a good thing. A rewarding thing. it can help us out of a sticky situation by helping carry the load of a problem or it can lead to the widening of the horizons. If we don’t share things like information and knowledge then we as people and a society won’t grow. It’s also nice to share the fruits of our labours which brings us to this film show evening OVFM will be having with our rivals   friends at Spring Park Film Makers!

On Thursday 6th March Spring Park will welcome us to their Club  at Emmanuel Church, The Grove, West Wickham BR4 9JS (map can be found HERE) – 7:45pm for an 8:00pm start – for an evening of the finest film making our region has to offer. And Spring Park will show some of their films too!

Both clubs will be screening a 45 minute selection of their films to show but remember, this is not a competition, just a chance to get together with fellow film makers and indulge in a civil and hopefully rewarding night of amateur film making.

If you are interested in attending then please let our Duracell driven secretary Freddy Beard know ASAP as Spring Park need to know how many cakes to provide!!

Thanks in advance to Spring Park for their hospitality and here’s to a good night!

OVFM Club Meeting Tuesday February 18th 2014

colin

This week’s club meeting was originally going to feature a talk from a chap named Andrew Bishop who had to pull out, so we are grateful to our very own Colin “Colin” Jones for stepping up to the plate in Andrew’s place.

Colin will be discussing animation, a subject I am sure many of us will be interested in and possibly have had idea of trying ourselves. Colin’s presentation will be a mixture of anecdotes and a film show, starting from his own experiments with the medium for opening credits for his family films. Colin’s son Tim picked up the mantle of becoming the animator in the family, making stop motion animation films, a few of which Colin hopes to share with us. Finally we shall look at the collaborations between Colin and former OVFM member and professional animator Dick Horn, whose work we sampled at the last archive evening in the form of Simple Sisyphus.

I hope you can join us on Tuesday for what promises to be an entertaining and enlightening evening.

Th-th-th-th-th-th-th-th-That’s all folks!!

OVFM Club Meeting Tuesday February 4th 2014

ovfm_proj

This post is being relayed to you in a low voice apropos to the subject matter so if you have difficulty understanding it, please move closer to your screen or monitor for better results.

READY NOW? THEN WE’LL BEGIN!!

Our next meeting sees the results of our latest project “Silent”, the criteria for which can be found HERE. A challenging remit for sure but one that is open to many interpretations which we are sure you have all keen to explore. Or at least it gave you a chance for some of you to remix some of your old films you were afraid to show because the sound was a bit dodgy!!

We are hoping that there is little “silence” by way of response when we ask if you have a film ready but if you do please reply to this thread in the comments section if you will be participating as it helps with the timing on the night.

Many thanks and hope to see you there!

OVFM Club Meeting Tuesday January 21st 2014

ovfmholiday

“We’re all going on a summer holiday…”

Well not really but we are hoping to see where some of our club members went on theirs as its time for our annual Holiday Films night!

Since we have a number of intrepid explorers among our numbers and if past years are any indication, we can be assured of a global trip via the selection of video travelogues we hope to see shared with us at our next club meeting.  Our globetrotting filmmakers have a reputation for covering all four corners of the globe in their pursuit of relaxation and discovery, while others just like to show off how rich they are by travelling to luxurious locales most of us couldn’t even afford a free brochure to, so expect to see sun, sea, sand and snow all in the one evening!

To all of you planning to contribute a film please ensure that it does NOT exceed the 10 MINUTE time limit. One second longer and you’ll be forced to pay a penance of listening to the Jedward CD on endless loop for a week! If you are bringing a film, please reply to this post in the comments section below (with run time, format, etc) as it makes things a lot easier to plan for time when knowing how many films will be screened.

Thanks for reading and see you on Tuesday!
