OVFM CLUB MEETING – TUESDAY NOVEMBER 28TH

comp_16

As we cannonball towards the end of the year there is just time to fit in one last round of annual club competition films in three separate categories that pay tribute to past club members.

Offering club members a chance to test their creativity under such differing criteria is not as easy as it seems, making this one of the unique and interesting challenges thrown at us. As ever, the three prizes up for grabs are:

Kath Jones Cup – A joke film with a punchline no longer than 5 minutes in length.

Mike Turner Plate – A film on any subject or style no longer than 60 seconds in length.

Vic Treen Trophy – A film set to music

The rules for each of these can be found HERE which we ask you to adhere to, otherwise the subject matter of your film is entirely in your hands, and you can enter a film for one, two or all three categories.

Last year saw 11 entries submitted which is pretty impressive given the dearth of entries in 2015 so anticipation is high for another healthy turn out this year.

Now the bit everyone seems to ignore –  if you are bringing a film this week it would be very much appreciated if you could PLEASE REPLY TO THIS POST in the comments/reply section below, letting us know the film’s run time, format (DVD, Blu-ray, USB Stick) and picture ratio (4:3 or 16:9). This is a great help for us when planning the evening out and helping things run smoothly so affording us this courtesy will help get you into Santa’s good books just in time Christmas.

Also, members are asked to submit their entries to the Annual Competition to Hugh at this meeting. The entry forms can be downloaded HERE (this is a Members’ Only page so be sure you are logged in).

Speaking of Hugh, we are hoping to receive an update on the status of his moustache that he is growing for Movember to raise money for charity.

Thanks for reading and good luck to all who enter a film/films.

  1. I will bring:

A Vic Treen Trophy entry: Film set to Music (5 minutes)
Also a Mike Turner Plate entry: Film under one minute.

Could I enter more than one film in these categories?

    1. Thanks Brian.

I believe Jane entered more than one film for a category last year, so I suppose a precedent has been set. Then again she is the boss, so… 😉

    2. Brian, I’m not aware of any restriction. In addition I believe that a film can be entered for as many categories that it satisfies
      Andy

  2. I will bring 2 films. One for Vic Treen and the other for Kath Jones comp. Both 4:3.

    Graham

  3. I shall be bringing a film on DVD 16.9 58 seconds. Haven’t made my mind up whether its for Kath Jones or Mike Turner Plate.

    1. Are you sure you don’t want to enter the Vic TREEN comp instead John? 😉 😛

I *might* have a film on DVD around 3 mins for the Vic Treen comp if I can get it finished in time and I feel its good enough to show everyone… 🙁

  4. I’ll be bringing a film on portable hard drive (USB) for Vic Treen Trophy
    MP4 16:9 4.40mins

Barbara Darby will be bringing a film for Vic Treen Trophy
    DVD 16:9 2.50mins

For Brian Pfeiffer & anyone else interested, I believe that a film could be entered into ALL 3 CATEGORIES if it fitted in with the rules, and indeed an individual can enter as many films as they like.

    1. Thanks Jane and Barbara!

It seems the Vic Treen Cup will hotly contested this year! And miraculously, I have finished my film – my FIRST EVER film set to music! You have been warned…. 😮

  5. Well, aren’t you lot full of surprises? After a quiet year on the film front, the total number of entries submitted for this year’s round of our triple competition night was 17 – beating last year’s tally of 11 and the biggest number in quite some time.

The first category was the Kath Jones Cup with yielded just three films – “Oh Dear” by John Bunce, “How To Open A Skoda When You’re Tired” by Graham Sinden and “Oh!” by we don’t know who (at least I don’t – this seemed to be a mystery entry nobody wanted to claim credit for).

In contrast, the Vic Treen Trophy proved popular with nine entries, all with varying themes, styles and choices of music. First up was “Catherine Palace” by our resident globetrotter Brian Pfeiffer, shot in St. Petersburg, Russia, which was followed by “Wheels” by Graham Sinden, showing us there are more to wheels than the ones on the side of a vehicle. We went abroad again for “Born In Africa” by Pat Palmer then to my first ever attempt at a film to music “Colour My World”.

Andy Watson took us to the Twin Towers asking us to “Remember” the victims of 9/11, while the next film took us further back in time for “A 1940’s Experience” courtesy of Barbara Darby. The Kemsing Mafia continued the evening with a trademark experimental film from our boss lady Jane Oliver with “Blah, Blah, Blur” before a return to Russia to visit “Statue Park” with Jim Morten-Robertson. The last entry in this category was “The Last Stand” from the Eptons.

Finally we had the entries for the Mike Turner Plate, with five films submitted, beginning with a trip to the “Gannet Colony” courtesy of Jim Morten-Robertson then we let Trevor Rogers “Light Up The Sky” with clips from a fireworks display. Next we witnessed “A Rumble In The Jungle” as witnessed by John Greengrass then we popped over to Germany with Brian Pfeiffer to discover “It’s The Same The Whole World Over”. Closing the evening was Reg Lancaster’s “The Juggler” featuring a skilled otter.

I think it is fair to say that we ended the year on a high with such a busy evening of films – now, if we can just get our return to our seats from the break down from the current 15 minutes to a few seconds maybe 2018 will be a year to remember! 😛
