2016 North vs South – The Results!!

NvS_16

Despite the weather plunging deeper into the coldness of winter this year;’s North vs South final at Farnborough Village Hall on Sunday December 4th welcomed a very healthy turn out (in fact two extra rows of chairs were needed) to find out which side of the river would prove victorious!

An impressive count of 27 entries (including five from OVFM) from 16 clubs nationwide made the final programme with two unfortunately being jettisoned at the last minute due to time constraints and the usual 45 minute tea break reduced to 30 minutes. The films – all conceived under the theme of Out Of The Blue – took in comedy, drama, documentary, animation, surrealism, and even someone showing off their new camera drone. A wide variety of ideas and concepts all conjured up from one simple phrase.

Before we get to the results, there were two people who correctly guessed the order of the decision of winner and runner-up from this year’s assigned judge John Sharp. Also the theme for next year’s competition was not correctly guessed by anyone either more on that in a moment.

So, who won?

Well, the runner up film was:

Don’t Give Up from AVS Movie Makers representing the North.

This was a docu-drama based on real events of a former sportsman turned company director who suffered a stroke aged 42 yet managed to come back from it and establish his own stroke support charity. This was awarded the Harry Adams Trophy.

And the winner is:

Ties That Bind from Sutton Coldfield Movie Makers representing the South.

Scooping the top prize of the John Wright Trophy was a drama about a retired married woman who reveals she had a child as teenager whom she gave up for adoption and the surprising reaction from her husband.

That means for the first time in a while the South was victorious so congratulations to Sutton Coldfield to making that happen!

EDIT:

And here is the final Top 10 rankings according to judge John Sharp:

1st       Sutton Coldfield Movie Makers – Ties That Bind  (John Wright Trophy)
2nd      AVS Movie Makers – Don’t Give Up  (Harry Adams Trophy)
3rd      Spring Park Film Makers – Where Time Stood Still  (Highly Commended)
4th      OVFM – Meet Dexter (Highly Commended)
5th      Cheadle & Gateley Film Makers – The Prodigal (Commended)
6th      Pendle Movie Makers – Out of the Blue (Commended)
7th      Bristol Film & Video Society – Don’t Call Me Baby (Commended)
8th      OVFM  – Reaching for the Skies
9th      Cheadle & Gateley Film Makers – Out of the Blue
10th    Tynemouth Video Film Making Group – Lost in Translation

And the theme chosen for the 2017 competition is MOVING.

This is an ironic topic since this will be OVFM’s last time hosting this event and we hope to hand over the reins to another southern club to carry on the work and mantle of Mike Coad and OVFM. To that we should extend of heartfelt thanks to the OVFM members who stepped up and organised this year’s show, as well as those who made sure everything ran smoothly on the day, from setting out the hall seats to supplying of the refreshments, from selling the raffle tickets to the actual screening of the films, and of course to Sam Brown for acting as MC.

So, that is the North vs South for 2016. Well done to the winners and to everyone who entered a film and here’s to next year’s event!

OVFM CLUB MEETING TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 27th 2016

basil_50

In one of the more egregious cases of “keeping up with the Joneses”, Basil Doody follows in the footsteps of Colin “Colin” Jones by celebrating his 50th Anniversary with OVFM.

1966 was quite the year – Doctor Who fans were stunned when William Hartnell morphed into Patrick Troughton before their eyes; the English football team actually won a match and The Beatles effectively kicked off the psychedelic era with their seminal album Revolver.

It was also the year that Basil Doody walked into the OCS club room for the first time. One member who was pleased to greet Basil was Colin Jones, since this meant he was no longer the new guy and could pass all the menial tasks onto Basil. For the next year, in between learning how to make films, Basil was also responsible for sweeping the ceiling, feeding the club platypus, exorcising the toilets and watering the fish.

Over the years Basil built up a library of films in which he either starred or directed, whilst became in demand as a voice over artist, although his voice-under skills were less in demand. Ever the team player, Basil would help other club members with their films and eventually would form a small group called The Gremlins with Pete Greenway (no relation).

While comedy was Basil’s favoured genre he also took a keen interest in special effects (but had to give it back as he failed to ask permission first) with his “Sperrymental Films”, as well as his famed “films cut to music” and his not so famed “films cut to ribbons”.

50 years worth of films is quite a lot to look back over, it would be a very long evening for a retrospective, so the Legion Of Doom (aka the OVFM Committee) have threatened Basil to narrow it down to a two hour sessions and he graciously acquiesced.

So join us for a special evening of archive films from one of the club’s most prolific and well regarded filmmakers, and for a slice of cake (we can’t afford a whole cake after Colin’s one broke the bank last year) in celebration of Basil Doody’s 50th anniversary with OVFM.

THE HISTORY OF ORPINGTON

For this week’s club gathering we had over the podium to Pat Palmer who has kindly stepped up to take the reins as organiser of this special club project as originally reported HERE.

Pat will be giving us an update on the current status of the project, seeking participation from club members and answering any questions we may have, so please do come along and give Pat your full support.

And if you haven’t done so already, those of you managed to attend and film at any of the Queen’s Birthday celebrations over the weekend could provide us with an update of which events you attended and how much footage you took.

Plus, don’t forget to talk to Ian Menage to get your tickets and entry forms for the 2016 Kent Film Festival!

See you then!

2016 Triangle Competition

triangle_16

Another annual inter-club competition is upon us, this time it is the Triangle Competition in which three of four clubs – OVFM, Spring Park, Shooters Hill and Epsom – enter films in a three-way contest to be judged by the fourth, with the judging role alternating each year.

This year’s event take place on  Thursday, March 17th  and the judging will be handled by Spring Park Film Makers thus will be held on their turf at Emmanuel Church, West Wickham BR4 9JS at 8 pm (doors usually open 7.30 – 7.45).

OVFM has done well in the past in this competition so let’s see if we can add another win to our score card. For more information or if you want tickets in order to represent OVFM in person on the night please get in touch with our esteemed secretary Freddy Beard.

OVFM CLUB MEETING TUESDAY MARCH 15th 2016

ovfmoscars_16

If you’re blue

And you don’t know where to go to

There’s always OVFM’s one night of glitz

Puttin’ on the Ritz

I must confess I’ve never put on a Ritz, I wouldn’t actually know where to start – I couldn’t find any instructions on the Internet (at least not on sites which haven’t been blocked by my ISP) – but I do know that we will be putting on the 2016 OVFM Oscars!

This is the one night of the year where we ditch our jeans and t-shirts and dig our best clobber out from the back of the mothball ridden wardrobe for its annual airing as we celebrate the hard work of club members by handing out bits of old scrap metal in recognition of their creative genius.

Of course the smart dress code is optional but if you do come in regular attire expect to be jeered, teased and have rotten vegetables thrown at you when we force you to sit outside in the car park for being a Kiljoy.

Last year saw Professor Mike Shaw crowned the big winner walking away with four awards and a sprained wrist. Will Mike reign supreme again this year or will someone else take all the glory?

As ever among the main prizes being contested are:

Ian Dunbar Cup

Orpington Trophy

Jubilee Shield

Vincent Pons Trophy

Mike Turner Plate

Kath Jones Cup

Bette Davis Eyes

Along with some new categories added by the Legion Of Doom which include:

Tallest Club Member

Best Club Member Over 30 But Under 50

Best Beard (natural hair colour only)

Outstanding Contribution To Putting Out Chairs

This year we are indebted to Kevin Doyle, secretary of AVS Movie Makers in Altrincham, for judging the entries and for his comments on said films, which he described as “very good”. Apparently “bloody brilliant” is not in his vocabulary so I guess we have to take what we can get but we do thank Kevin for giving up his time for us.

Aside from dressing up our stalwart refreshments commander Peggy “One Lump Or Two?” Parmenter will have some extra treats to compliment the teas and coffees to mark this special occasion – and when I say “will have” I obviously mean “Peggy didn’t give it a single thought before I brought it up”. You can thank me later.

Don’t forget that plus 1s are welcome (or in my case minus 1) while plus fours are prohibited as this isn’t a golf club. A 3-Iron is a golf club and is also the title of a film by South Korean auteur Kim Ki-Duk who also made a film called Time which I am now going to call on this post.

The Oscars is the most prestigious and fun filled evening of the year in the OVFM calendar so we do hope you can make the effort to join us at our regular meeting venue, the Barnard Room in St Augustine’s Church this coming Tuesday March 15th for this special annual event.
