OVFM Club Meeting Tuesday January 5th 2016

TT_15_FINAL

I can’t believe it is 2016 already!

2015 has flown by in general but the year for OVFM seems to have gone even quicker! Where does the time go? It was barely nine months ago we kick off the annual Top Ten competition and now the final is here!

With the five individual rounds having been contested the top highest scoring films will be shown again on this night, with some having undergone a few changes as per the feedback given following the original screenings. The films will be judged and scored again and the winner and runner up will be revealed and subsequently rewarded at the Oscars in March.

Now, lest my maths is to fail me as usual the Top Ten finalists should be as follows:

“Commute” by Barbara Walker

“A Day In The Life Of Kieran Jones” by Lee Relph

“Table Top Whimsy” by John Bunce

“30 Years of Caring” by John & Ann Epton

“Lie Back” by Mike Shaw

“Leaf Cutter Ants” by David Laker

“Yellowstone” by Brian Pfeiffer

“Broken” by Bob Vine

“Central Park New York” by Jim Morton Robertson

“Our Memorable Trip To London” by Barbara Darby

Our competitions officer Brenda Wheatley should have been in touch with all the finalists by now notifying them that their films are required for this evening, so please bring them along if you are among that number or if you cannot make it, please contact Brenda to let her know, or if possible perhaps speak to a fellow club member or any member of the Committee to arrange for your film to be brought in by someone else.

This meeting is also the final deadline for the Annual Competition so if you haven’t done so, please download a form HERE and bring it along with your film(s) and entry fee, while hopefully by now you will all have also given Peggy your money and orders for the Annual Dinner.

Good luck to all the Top Ten finalists and we hope to see you all on Tuesday night!

OVFM Club Meeting Tuesday December 22nd 2015

You better watch out

You better not cry

Better not pout

I’m telling you why

OVFM’s Christmas Social is here!

The festive season is very much in full swing and it wouldn’t be complete without our annual Christmas social. Or it might be, depending on what’s on telly this year.

As usual we move from the Barnyard Rooms to the larger Garden Rooms for this event which will see the now traditional quizzes (so don’t forget your pen and paper), including my awesome Film Picture Quiz, and other fun events devised and arranged the our committee the Legion Of Doom.

And of course Peggy and her elves will have another luxurious buffet spread for us to stare at longingly during the games then when it is feast time we find ourselves at the end of the line and end up watching everyone else load up their plates and leave nothing of what we actually like.

Unfortunately it looks unlikely that Cherie will be there to lead us in the traditional sing-a-long although we did have an offer from Justin Bieber to deputise but we told him to **** off!

Since the rules are relaxed you are welcome to wear something festive and fun if you so wish, or you can not bother at all. While the focus will be on fun (allegedly) we do ask that if you have a film for the Annual Competition then please submit it to Brenda along with your £2 fee and entry form. Also any footage for the Newsreel would also be appreciated and this meeting is also the closing date for Annual Dinner forms as well.

Not much else to say except see you there and if you can’t make it then Merry Christmas to you! 🙂

North v South Competition 2015 Report & Results

North v South Competition Grand Final.

6th December 2015, Farnborough Village Hall, Farnborough, Kent.
3pm – 7.30pm

This years event was tinged with sadness as we remembered Mike Coad, the Orpington Video and Film Makers member and keen champion and organizer of the North v South Competition in the south. His sudden and unexpected death left us shocked and floundering in the run up to the Grand Final as he had always taken complete control of the organization and arrangements. However OVFM and friends rallied round and with the assistance of Jo, his beloved wife, we were able to assemble the pieces of the puzzle and go ahead with the event. Throughout the process Jo showed amazing courage as she not only coped with grief and the practicalities of arranging the funeral but helped us along every step of the way. She, as the rest of us, was determined to make the event one that Mike would have been proud of.

Mike Coad

With an audience of nearly seventy and with representatives from clubs all around the south the atmosphere in the cosy village hall was warm, friendly and filled with anticipation! Every effort was made to follow Mike Coad’s format and as was his custom we showed all of the twenty-one films entered into the competition. A consequence of this was the three hours plus of screening time alone! But the great variety of films shown and the sheer quality of many of them meant that the time flew by as the audience enjoyed a feast of entertainment.

With a break at half time for refreshments the buzz in the hall was one of genuine excitement at the prospect of who would take this year’s winners’ trophy. Throughout the event Mike Coad’s presence was palpable and also physical as Jo, his wife, had framed a wonderful photograph of him that she had titled ‘King Of North v South’, and which was put in pride of place beside the screen.

Keeping with Mike’s own strict procedure only one or two people knew the results until they were announced by the m/c OVFM vice-chairman Sam Brown at the very end. There was a hint of disappointment that the North had won the John Wright Trophy again but a general feeling amongst the audience that ‘Energy Crisis’ by Chesterfield Film Makers was a fine and worthy winner. Great pride in the south and especially the Sutton Coldfield Movie Makers’ camp that two of their films (‘The Letter’ and ‘The Shout’) were joint winners of the Harry Adams Trophy, representatives of the club were delighted to be presented the trophy by Jo Coad.

Special thanks to Andy Watson, projectionist, Peggy Parmenter & team (including Jo Coad) for the refreshments, Ron Parmenter doorman, Sam Brown master of ceremonies, Freddy Beard, liaison and communication, Brenda Wheatley raffle, Ian Menage for sorting out the digital copies, Tony Johnson southern heat judge (at very short notice!), everyone who pulled together to make the event the success it was, and all the clubs who supported the competition by entering films and by attending the event.

The Results
1st – Chesterfield Film Makers – Energy Crisis
=2nd – Sutton Coldfield Movie Makers – The Shout
=2nd – Sutton Coldfield Movie Makers – The Letter
=4th – Sutton Coldfield Movie Makers – Out of the Past
=4th – Chesterfield Film Makers – May the Farce Be With You
=4th – Warrington Film Makers – Continuation
7th – AVS – Broken Promise
8th – Coast Video Club – One-UpManShip
9th – OVFM (Bob Vine) – Broken
10th – WAVE Video Club – Getting Old

Congratulations to Sutton Coldfield Movie Makers for doing so well for the South by picking up the Harry Adams Trophy for runner-up. Also well done to Bob Vine for getting into the top ten with ‘Broken’.

Next year’s theme is ‘Out of the blue’. However the future is uncertain as we have no one yet to organize the competition in the south. Step forward if it’s something YOU could take on!

OVFM Club Meeting Tuesday December 8th 2015

ovfm_other

This week’s club meeting affords us the opportunity to watch a selection of films without the pressure of being judged by our peers as we present a look at the output from outside of OVFM.

At the time of writing the list of clubs contributing showreels has yet to be finalised but no doubt the quality will be of the usual high standard we’ve come to expect from our amateur filmmaking brethren. And who knows, maybe we’ll see something to inspire us in trying something new or give us an idea for a film of our own?

And with time permitting, a further discussion about the upcoming display stall for the OVFM Tesco stall has been proposed to take place at this session, so please get your thinking caps on about how we can best represent and promote the club via this prime opportunity to reach a wide range of prospective new members.

Finally entries for the Annual Competition are now being accepted so please download and print off a form from HERE and submit your films and £2 entry fee to Brenda on Tuesday, with the closing date being the first meeting of 2016 on January 5th.

See you then!
