OVFM Advert II

This week’s club meeting is another project evening and a follow-up on one from 2011, where we asked you to create some promo clips that will hopefully encourage and entice new comers to join our humble group. Unlike making a short film for entertainment purposes this is a chance to show off your persuasive skills and selling techniques and OVFM is the product you have to sell to the many amateur filmmakers in the Orpington and surrounding area who have yet to learn about our existence.

And if time is permitting, the results of the two recent Coaching Evening sessions will be screened for our delectation and discussion.

I Wished The Long Hot Night Goodbye…

…And pushed the thick air away like it was a limp, damp blanket heavy on my skin. I downed the last dregs of my drink, there was no ice in the glass, the ice had long since gone south along with the air con and my last clean shirt. Marlowe get off your sorry butt, it’s Tuesday the 16th July and there’s work to be done. I flung the unfinished Sudoku onto the desk, that was one puzzle I wouldn’t crack, and peeled myself off the leather seat. The effort made me sweat. Summer in the city you had to love it !

The tyres squealed in protest on the sticky blacktop as I stuck the old Ford in drive and cruised uptown. The streets were empty, nobody but a fool PI would be out in heat like this, so I chewed a little on what the night ahead might bring, maybe I’d see the dame, the redhead in that red dress. I checked the glove box for my 45, Dancing Queen by Abba, a little scratched but still servicable, it would do if things got lively.

I swung the car into the lot. A big beemer squatted out front. The engine smelt hot, somebody had gunned this Bavarian beast without mercy. They had to be plumb crazy or desperately short of time, or maybe a little of both. I set my hat brim low and wrestled my way into the joint.

It struck me hard. Something was wrong. My nose itched. I looked around, once, quickly. I took it all in. You could cut the hopelessness with a knife, the sort of knife you’d give a kindergarten kid. There’d been a happening here, that much was obvious, but now it was quiet…too quiet, the lull before the storm you might say. I tapped my jacket for my hip flask and took a swig. The nip felt good, comforting. I was ready now…

So anyway the gist is it’s film shoot night for ‘Power Corrupts’, one of the club entries for the annual North V South competition. David has brought together all the ingredients for a really great production and all he needs now is a bit of luck, a following wind and enough ‘support artists’ to make up a decent crowd scene. We wait and wait, the tension is like a coiled spring that’s close to breaking. But one by one they trickle in and gradually they gather, the friends the neighbours and the club stalwarts. We have our crowd!

With crowd, crew and our leading ladies all assembled the shoot begins. David takes masterful control of the situation and with him in the director’s stool the filming ticks along with assured efficiency until ALL the scenes are in the can and the ambitious schedule completed.

To the cast and crew I take my hat off to you all. In fact I take off everything that decency will allow to salute your patience, fortitude, good grace and good humour especially in the teeth of what was a long and very muggy night. Well done and lets kick the North’s bottom!

Here at OVFM we make films not just for our own enjoyment but for others too. We are proud of our output and, like all creative groups, we like to share the fruits of our labours with others at our annual Spring and Autumn films shows held at the Methodist Church, Orpington which, if you have attended in the past, we hope you have enjoyed.

But did you know that OVFM also runs film shows for other clubs, groups and organisations looking for something different to entertain their members, or as part of a fund raising event?

With a wide range of subjects and genres in our ever increasing archive of films, we can put together a programme of short films to suit the various tastes, needs and demographics of your group. New OVFM Project – “OVFM Advert II”

New OVFM Project

OVFM Advert II

Back in 2010 we ran a project evening where we asked you to, the loyal and productive members of OVFM, to make an advert to promote OVFM and hopefully encourage new member to join the club.

Well, with plans for the club for open out very own YouTube channel very close to coming to fruition (watch this space) we are once again giving you the opportunity to get your creative caps on and make another advert for the club. It can be comedic, dramatic, esoteric or a straight up infomercial – just as long as it gets the message across of what we do in OVFM and what we can offer prospective film makers.

You can see a previous entry from Mike Shaw here:

The deadline is the club meeting on August 6th so you’d better get started!

Good luck!

In Memoriam: Derek Allen

derek

By now many of you will be aware that OVFM lost another member of its family last week when Derek Allen sadly passed away. A stalwart of the club for many years, Derek will be fondly remembered for his prolific film output and cheeky sense of humour.

His funeral will be on Monday July 22nd at Beckenham Crematorium at 12:45pm. Olive Allen has requested that instead of flowers, donations be made to Harris Hospice in memory of Derek. The funeral directors will be on hand to take donations or they can be posted.

DEREK ALLEN 1923-2013

Obituary by Reg Lancaster

All who knew him will share our sadness at the loss of our dear friend Derek Allen who passed away in his sleep recently. He was a valued member of OVFM.

Derek’s love of film started early. “We kids used to gather up scraps of 35mm film to roll up tight in paper,” he’d wink, “When you set it alight, it made great ‘stink bombs!”

Later he bought a Boots ciné camera, making holiday films and he joined OCS, our former name. Often working late, he couldn’t attend many meetings. He returned after buying a video camera and was surprised to discover that he was our first video member and was promptly asked to give a talk about how it worked.

His long friendship with Mike Turner began in the local National Trust Centre. They’d record outings and group holidays together, including little off-the-cuff comedies shot at these exotic locations. Mike then joined us and soon we three became friends.

He had recently stood down from several committees but when our Secretary Annabelle approached him about standing for Committee, he agreed and served for several years. Many strings to his bow became clear, such as having been a Flight Lieutenant in the Air Training Corps.

The subject of his recent film, My Friend Ralph was Ralph Reeder, founder of the famous Scout Gang Shows. Derek was involved for years, both behind the scenes and on stage too. At his Golden Wedding he made a touching, funny speech and later, sitting with old pals they went through the old comic songs, as we stood around applauding. The children loved it.

A member of the National Trust Centre’s fund-raising Committee, Derek produced shows at the Stag Theatre and memorably featured with Mike Turner and NT Chair Geoff Lewry in a hilarious drag version of “Sisters” the Beverley Sisters’ hit. He regularly made a perfect Stan Laurel, with well upholstered Geoff as Oliver Hardy. Like the originals, one look and you felt better.

As a boy Derek won an essay competition and loved writing. He came up with articles, ideas for films, letters and emails at the drop of a hat. The Committee decided to have a serious go at the North v South competition and next day his story idea dropped on our mat, well ahead of three others. I could see how his idea could be done and asked if I could photograph it, wrote a screenplay and we called ourselves The Geriatrics. We made four dramas and brought the elusive John Wright Trophy South three times. A keen Casablanca man (guilty, your Honour) he pursued video editing with relish, never failing to enter every club competition going. Derek was a talented, cheerful and delightful man who was a treasure to have in any organisation or club.

The sudden death of his father saw Derek take on the family business very young. He was dapper, good company and surprisingly energetic. He was still working right up till last autumn.

Earlier this year, he went into hospital for two months. It was typical of his attitude to life that the medical team were impressed by his spirit and forbearance in the way he faced his situation. Looking forward to his 90th birthday, he was sharp as a tack the last time I saw him, only 36 hours before the end.

Of his many talents, it was with children that you saw Derek at his best. They don’t fool easily and he tuned to their wavelength effortlessly. Derek had no knowledge of French but our Swiss grand daughter Roxane who has Down syndrome, took to him instantly and for them, over the years, communication was never a problem. His own large family circle adored him.

It was a pleasure to know Derek. Our sincere condolences go to his loving wife Olive, their children and grandchildren at this time. He will be greatly missed.

Please feel free to share your memories and thoughts about Derek on this page.

Thank you.

OVFM Club Meeting Tuesday July 9th 2013

garden_party

The sun has got his hat on, which makes you wonder what the hat is made out of to withstand such scorching heat, and that can mean only one thing: rain is on its way!

But before that, we have the small matter of the OVFM annual garden party (nee barbecue) to get through. This year’s fiasco will be hosted by our treasurer David “Offshore Account” Laker and his good lady wife Carole. Their address can be found on the Members Details page or in the latest issue of the Viewfinder and attendees are asked to arrive at 7:00pm for 7:15pm. Anyone who arrives late will be tarred and feathered.

Dress code is casual but not trashy, while the men are left to their own discretion as to whether they want to a dress or not.

David has made a specific request that no-one park their cars on the grass verge outside his house; helicopters and battleships are permitted but not cars. This is because it will upset the dog owning neighbours as their pets will have nowhere to soil. That’s the official reason – the real reason is David doesn’t want his neighbours knowing that he associates with such riff raff as us!

By now you all should have placed your food order with Freddy and while teas and coffees will be served during the night, you are requested to bring your own drinks if you fancy something a bit fizzier/stronger/drinkable. This also applies to any food for those of you not accommodated by the proposed menu or have a special diet to adhere to. Oh that reminds me – no alcohol either. Right Cherie?

Hands up anyone capable of levitation? Just as I thought, in that case it is worth your while bringing your own chairs to sit on and your own tables for resting your plates, glasses, cutlery, condiments and other relevant items you will also need to bring with you. I never though I’d say this, but this could be the one time of the year where it might be of great benefit to own a caravan – if anything you’ll avoid the long queue for the slop bucket!

The final request our decadent hosts have is for anyone in possession of table tennis paddles to bring them along to the event. Now, we all know David as a man of culture and high brow tastes so it stands to reason he has something refined planned that will make the evening a more enjoyable experience for all. Or maybe this is the night he reveals his kinky side to us all. The only way to find out is to bring your paddle!!

I think that is just about it.

Roll on Tuesday!
